Reading Tutor
New Hope Christian Schools are privileged to have on staff a part-time reading and spelling tutor who specializes in Dyslexia. Maureen McCarthy is a certified teacher working part-time computerizing our library catalog and part-time tutoring.
She is the only person certified in the Barton Reading and Spelling System in Southern Oregon. Students needing extra reading and spelling help are referred to her for training and support. Her services are over and above New Hope tuition prices, but are less than non-students pay. She works with both public and private school students as well as adults. Openings are on a first-come, first-served basis.
The Barton Reading and Spelling System is “an Orton-Gillingham Influenced Simultaneously Multisensory Explicit and Systematic Phonics Program” which takes students through word analysis and synthesis steps to build their knowledge of how words are put together. Lessons go from the simplest to the most complex, including foreign language influence. Students are taught the different kinds of syllables and how to divide them. Each lesson includes both reading and spelling practice.
Every student is individually evaluated to find their starting place and progresses at a pace that is successful for him or her. If a parent wants their student formally tested for dyslexia, that is also available.
